Barbara and The Boyfriends - Jacqui Rivers and The Boyfriends - My time in Portsmouth by Paul Morehead
Barbara and The Boyfriends started in Cornwall in the early 1960s (the name was obviously copied from Lulu and The Luvvers). A businessman from Portsmouth called Ken Crawley, who ran a building company, had a contract to build some bungalows in Cornwall. Terry, one of the guys who worked for him, met the group and sang with them. Ken offered to manage them and financed them to turn professional. Paul Morehead (lead) and Ray Jenkins (bass) were recruited and the group played professionally all over Cornwall.
In 1964, when the building contract ended, Ken moved back to Portsmouth and offered to relocate the group. He rented a big old house for us in Alhambra Road, Southsea, right opposite South Parade Pier, where we all lived together. Over the next year some of the original Cornish members left and were replaced by local players: John Dennis (ex-Sherlock and The Saints) on drums; Don Golding (ex-Dynamos) on guitar and vocals; Jacqui Symes replaced Barbara as vocalist (we worked under the name ‘Jacqui Rivers and The Boyfriends’); and briefly, Geoff Collinge (later of The Monk) on drums.
During this time gigs were plentiful; we played all over the area, including a residency at The Bottle in the Wall Club; another at the Ryde Castle Hotel; and various gigs at naval establishments, the pier, Savoy ballroom, the Star ballroom, and Ventnor Winter Gardens. We often played in Leigh Park, many times at the Greyhound pub, Excel Bowl, and the Social Club.
We were offered a contract to tour Germany. Barbara returned to the group and we recruited a drummer from London called Thunderfoot Purdy.
Although I had always planned to return to Portsmouth to live, life led me elsewhere and I never actually returned to the area after Germany. Both Ray and I have continued to have professional playing careers for most of the intervening years.
I only lived in the Portsmouth area for a couple of years, but they were some of the happiest years of my life. I was lucky that it was such a wonderful time for music, and I made some great friends. We organised a Boyfriends reunion in 2012. Sadly we were unable to track down Jacqui Symes to join us.

Marcie Jones and the Cookies.

The Cookies were Wendy, Beverley and Margaret Cook, born in Portsmouth! Margaret was born in Guildford Road, Fratton, Wendy in St Marys Hospital, and Beverly in Raglan Street, Southsea (the bit that became Somerstown).
We all emigrated to Brisbane where “the Cook sisters” won a talent quest in 1960 beating “the Gibbs Brothers” (yes, later The Beegees) – all very young migrant kids then. Due to Mum’s homesickness, we all returned to Sheffield Road, Fratton, Portsmouth between 1962 and 1965 and caught up with swinging England for a while then moving back to Aus.
The Cookies formed in 1965 and gained success initially in Brisbane. They recorded a few minor hits including a No 1 in Brisbane and as session singers also did many backing vocals for a wide range of artists from heavy rock bands to pop balladeers. They toured nightspots in SE Asia then came to England in 1968. The girls appeared at the Guildhall Portsmouthon 5th November 1969 with Cliff Richards and around Europe. They also toured Australia with The Monkees, Gene Pitney, Dobie Grey and very many Australian rock bands, singers, and appeared widely on stage at clubs, on TV shows, recording sessions etc.
In London, Wendy later married Douggie Reece who was then Dusty Springfield’s Musical Director.
Marcie and the Cookies were voted Australia’s top female act in1968. Although we are all now resident in Melbourne
